FEAR - I'm scared. How bad is it?

IGNORANCE - I have no idea what to do!

REGRETS - Oh my, did I do enough with my family and my life?

SHOCK - This can't be happening to me!

TERROR - Am I going to die?

I've actually heard the words... YOU'VE GOT cANCER... TWICE!!!

In January, February 2009, I was told that I had Stage-4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

After a multitude of tests and scans over my first few days in the hospital - on February 2nd, 2009, one doctor actually implied that I should...

'GET MY AFFAIRS IN ORDER!!!'

I was terrified!

But... here's some awesome news - on August 5, 2009 the doctor said, "Barry, you're cancer free!"

In 2016, out of the blue, my GP doctor said to me, "When you get back from your business trip, we better take a serious look at your prostate cancer!"

"WHAT PROSTATE cANCER?" I asked... I was in his office within the hour! I had cancer... AGAIN!!!

And I was terrified...AGAIN!

And then I remembered the tools I used to help me beat the stage-4 diagnosis and... even though I was still scared - the terror disappeared!

When you hear those three scary words... "YOU'VE GOT cANCER..."

You can get temporarily disoriented and confused... Which means you may start searching and scrambling for solutions and you may start listening to anything - any advice that may 'POSSIBLY' make you better.

But the challenge with that is - you may end up with so many options - that you'll cause yourself undue stress and that may even make the problem worse!

The questions, worries and concerns that you are experiencing can cause you to feel like you're drowning in a sea of uncertainty... You may be wondering:

* How serious is it?

* Will I need chemo or radiation?

* I literally don't know what to do!

* I'm scared! Truthfully...I'm terrified!

* I'll try anything!

* I don't want to die! I still have things I want to do!

* I still have people I want to meet and 'Do life' with!

* I have unfinished business... There's people I'd like to forgive and there are others who I need to ask forgiveness from!

* Who do I talk to?

* Where can I turn?

Your Doctors and Nurses will do everything in their power to help you heal!

For the most part, these Angels of the Infirmary are 'called' to help you heal and ease your stress.

Your friends and family will most probably be there for moral support and prayers!

BTW... Here's a TRUTH you may want to know... Some people may be nervous to speak to you or visit you - simply because they're afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing. That's okay, they're human. Not everyone can be calm in the face of overwhelming stress. Even though we are the ones who need help - We have to learn to give them some grace.

They are probably scared too!

When I was diagnosed with stage-4, non-Hodgkins lymphoma it was absolutely terrifying.

The medical team did everything in their power to ease my pain and reduce my stress...

But...they also prepared me for the worst outcome... "Barry, you may want to get your affairs in order!"

Even though the straight truth is always best - hearing those words made me think of all the things I may miss out on...

* Living up to my full potential

* Seeing my kids get married

* Growing old with someone who loves me

* Grandchildren!

After almost a week in Toronto General Hospital I was transferred across the street to Princess Margaret cANCER Hospital.

It is known to be one of the top-5 cancer treatment hospitals in the world.... BUT...

It's also known as - God's Waiting Room!

The mere thought of being admitted to a cancer treatment center was emotionally overwhelming.

My first night was a mixture of hope and panic! In all honesty... I cried. (For the third time that week).

But... sometimes when we're in panic mode and we think we have exhausted all other options and possibilities... We cry out, "God, please help me!"

As I previously mentioned...I am well aware that the Doctors and the Nurses did eveything possible to help me heal...

I am convinced that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit SAVED MY LIFE!

That first night in the cancer hospital...

After my wife and family had gone home....

After the Nurses tucked me in...

After the lights were dimmed...

My HOPE started to fade as well.

I laid in my bed and my imagination was going wild.

I remember silently thinking, "Oh God, is this it?"

I drifted off for a while and I was eventually awakened by a very vivid dream. I could see one of my teachers speaking at the front of a seminar room...

He said 5 magic Words. Since it was a dream I asked him to repeat the 5 words. He did.

I awoke and said those same 5 words over my health, my marriage, my financial situation and my business.

Those 5 words changed EVERYTHING...

LET GO AND LET GOD!!!

There were twice-daily blood tests. Also CT-Scans, MRI's... and many other dignostioc tests

There was a bone marrow biopsy

There was a PICC-Line inserted into my veins (3 times!)

There were three pleural effusions (In total they drained 5.1 litres of cancerous fluid from my lungs!)

There were two chemotherapy treatments in the hospital (and 6 more when I was an Out-patient)

AND...

There were SIDE EFFECTS... TONS of side effects...

As I previously mentioned... the Doctors and the Nurses helped me get better...

I know that it was God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit who healed me and SAVED MY LIFE!

After one very heavy day of tests, medical scans and imaging, I received some mixed messages from one of the doctors...

And some deeply disturbing news from the bankruptcy trustee... I was having a very hard time sleeping.

My anxious spirit and my tears indicated to me that I seemed to be at the end of my rope - again!

Then, in my desperation, I remembered the 5 magic words (Let Go And Let God) and... I could ask God for some help!

So, I did! "Heavenly Father, I'm scared! I don't know what to do. Please help me!"

A short while later, at about 2:00 AM, one of my nurses checked in on me. She held my hand and she listened as I shared my tears, my fears and my terrors.

I later found out that her last name was 'Sheppard'... I took it as a sign that God answered my prayer. (Like it talks about in the Bible - It's nice to feel SAFE in the SHEPHERD'S arms)

Nurse Sheppard's heartfelt wisdom, both medically and as a Christian care-giver, calmed me down, eased my stress and gave me a whole new perspective on the truth about how things really work.

From that moment on I was calm and I knew... That between God and I... We could handle anything that came up!

Ever since I was given my cancer-free diagnosis in August of 2009 my Facebook friends and family started telling my story to their friends and families.

In 2013 we ended up writing a book that was filled with true stories about my experience... and the experiences of other friends. I was able to counsel, comfort and share some heartfelt truths about our 'adventures'.

The book is called THE cANCER DANCE and shares the truth about the tears, fears and terrors... along with...

HOPE, HUMOUR, POSSIBILITIES and MIRACLES.

Also...You want a second chance!

You want to be HOPE-FILLED!

You aspire to 100% wholeness and healing!

Based on your current diagnosis - you could be experiencing a 'Wake-up' call. You now have first-hand knowledge of what it's like to feel like you just might miss out on so many things!
